The Importance of Emptiness

I used to think emptiness is something you didn’t want. Needless to say, I now see the importance of being empty.

My definition of being empty: empty of self, empty of striving, empty of the need to be right, empty of the need to judge, and empty of the need to perceive anything in any certain way at all—freed from attachment to the fruits of my action.

When things are not working out the way you want, no problem; you are not attached to the outcome. You are freed from the need to judge the person or situation. There is peace.

It is like a hurricane with everything around you in turmoil, but you sit in the eye of the storm. When you sit in the eye, you have time to ponder, not react. Reacting is always based on fear, the fight-or-flight syndrome.

When you react, there is no peace. When you ponder and rest, you can choose peace.  You choose to surrender and realize nothing matters save the extension of the good, the holy, and the beautiful. It is in this peace that it becomes natural to ask: what is Your Will for me?

Being empty does not mean that you are not involved with choices. As you empty yourself of the ego ways, something begins to happen. You start allowing Christ Consciousness to be the voice that leads.

Ego consciousness creates its own image rather extending Love. As you empty of the ego ways—or, as I say, Screaming Mimi—your choices become less and less fear filled. The choices you make create more Joy around you and everyone. Life no longer is about me; Life is about all.

I had a teacher that said, “Life is not all about you.” It is not. I am pleased to say, it is a whole lot better. You realize that there is so much more to life. To live empty, your life is joy filled.

Our choice: joy filled or fear filled. I choose Joy.
